Burlington is Halton Region's largest city with 159,400 residents and is located on the western edge of the GTA along the Niagara Escarpment. Burlington provides easy access to the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) and highways 403, 407 and 427. Burlington has two GOTrain stations, Burlington in the middle and Aldershot in the west. Major employers here include Cogeco Cable, Boehringer Ingleheim, and Gennum Corporation. Burlington has three general areas, Aldershot, west of the QEW and nestled along Burlington Bay, Old Burlington which is between the QEW and Lake Ontario, and the newer areas of Burlington lie north of the QEW closer to the Escarpment. Burlington has 6 public high schools, 2 Catholic high schools, 6 public libraries, and 37 elementary schools. It is very close to Hamilton's McMaster University, with Oakville's Sheridan College and University of Toronto's Mississauga campus not far away and readily accessible by GO transit. McMaster University will locate a McMaster University campus in Burlington, starting with the DeGroote School of Business. Shopping Burlington is well retailed, with 40 retail plazas, malls and centres, mostly clustered along Fairview St and Upper Middle Rd. There are also a number of shopping districts with smaller retailers, including downtown Burlington on Brant Street around James, and in Aldershot along Plains Road. Recreation Homes Burlington has a number of new home developments, with options ranging from townhouse developments and single family dwellings for first-time buyers, all the way to estate properties situated on lush golf courses and high rise condos with lakefront views. The older areas of Burlington include the neighbourhoods of (from West to East): Maple. Wellington Square, Dynes, Longmoor, and Shoreacres. The newer Burlington communities, lying north of the QEW & 403, include: Tyandaga, Brant Hills, mountainside, Headon Forest, Palmer, Millcroft, and Tansley.
